There’s a lot that goes into getting in shape. If you find it difficult to get to the gym on a regular basis, you may benefit from having a fitness studio in your very own house. Here are a few things you need to know about setting up a gym in your garage.

INSULATE THE SPACE

If you live in an area that gets cold during the winter months, insulation is going to be a factor. Even if your walls are insulated, the door may not be. Consider replacing the garage door with an insulated door. You may also want to put a space heater in the garage – even if the space is insulated, it may still get chilly when the temperature drops.

MAKE SURE THE FLOOR CAN TAKE IT

If you’re going to be working out in your garage, you want to make sure the floor isn’t going to get damaged. You want a strong, durable type of flooring, like epoxy garage flooring. This can turn a cement floor into one that’s more functional and aesthetically pleasing.

MAX OUT THE STORAGE SPACE

The more types of workouts you’re going to do in the garage, the more storage space you’re going to need. You also want to make sure you’re keeping the floor space open for you to use. Use clever vertical storage space by hanging or stacking bins and baskets. Also, install hooks and deep shelves for more organization space. In addition to getting smart with your garage storage space, you may want to store seasonal items in a storage unit to really optimize space and make room for equipment.

MAKE YOUR FIRST BIG PURCHASE

There’s probably one piece of equipment that you have your heart set on for your home gym. This may be a treadmill, barbell or resistance bands. Whatever the cornerstone of your workouts is going to be, buy that first and design the rest of your gym around it.

BUY OR MAKE CORE EQUIPMENT

Even if you plan to evolve your home gym over time, there are four basics you’ll want to start with: a plyometric box, a power rack, a medicine ball and parallettes. You can make or buy these items. If you’re going to buy them, look for secondhand items with only a little wear and tear in order to save some money.

When you have a home gym, it becomes so much easier to workout regularly. You don’t have to worry about waiting for equipment or dealing with unsanitary conditions. By transforming your garage into a gym, you’ll have a gym that you actually enjoy.
