MAN RUNNING IN NATURE ON AN EMPTY ROAD

Running is among the most effective and least expensive sports you can undertake to improve your health. However, running on the road does come with its hazards. Be mindful of these safety tips before you lace up your shoes and head out the door.

OBEY THE RULES OF THE ROAD

The experience of running out on the open road feels very freeing. It’s one of the reasons why so many runners love the sport. However, the feelings of exuberance and freedom that comes with running outside may make some runners a little bit oblivious to what’s going on around them, including traffic. By maintaining an awareness of your surroundings, you can avoid some of the dangers that can come with running outdoors. According to Abels & Annes, obeying the rules of the road increases your safety. It’s important to remember to use designated crosswalks, be cautious at intersections, be seen by wearing bright colors, stay alert, and not be unpredictable.

FIND THE RIGHT SHOES

A good pair of running shoes not only helps your feet to cushion the blows that come from pounding the pavement, but they also protect the rest of your body. According to Runner’s Goal, ill-fitting, uncomfortable running shoes can have an effect on your legs, your lower back and the rest of your body. Some issues that come from ill-fitting shoes, like blisters, not only make running uncomfortable but also can cause infection and other issues if left untreated. Shoes that fit well mitigate many of these issues. Shoes that have good traction allow you to run on different terrains and in varying weather conditions. Just as your car can slide off the road and cause an accident if you don’t have the right tires, so too can the wrong shoes. Keep yourself upright and on the road by investing in a good pair of shoes with excellent traction.

THE RIGHT SAFETY GEAR

If you are an ardent runner, the chances are you like to run whether it’s day or night, sunny or rainy or foggy or clear. According to Live Run Travel, one of the ways you can mitigate some of the challenges that come with running in these conditions is to carry the right gear and wear the right clothing. Reflective clothing allows the drivers on the road to see you even if visibility is low. Running with a headlamp can also help in low-visibility conditions. Additionally, it’s good to carry items like water bottles and first-aid kits so you can take care of issues like dehydration or blisters while you are on the road as opposed to having to wait until you get back home.

Taking your run to the open road in a safe way allows you to experience the great outdoors while you get in shape. Just make sure you take precautions like the ones listed above so you can make sure to stay safe while you exercise.
