How To Stay Fit And Active During The Winter
By All American Fitness
Winter is a time of the year that comfort food becomes a bigger part of your daily diet. That means it’s important to maintain a healthy and active life. There are plenty of ways to stay fit and active during the winter months. Here are three great ideas that you can try.
WORKOUT AT HOME
If you don’t like going outdoors in the winter, working out in the comfort of your warm home is a great way to stay fit and active. You could invest in some affordable equipment. Dumbbells, kettlebells, and yoga mats are simple, inexpensive items to start with or add to your home gym. A treadmill or an elliptical would be great if it’s in your budget. Workout videos are also a convenient option. There are plenty of affordable, subscription-based workout apps that allow you to mix up the type of videos you use. If you don’t want to spend any money, you could look up free videos on YouTube or try bodyweight exercises.
OUTDOOR WINTER SPORTS
Outdoor sports are very intense. You’ll definitely burn a lot of calories participating in just about any outdoor winter sport you can think of. For example, ice hockey can help you burn anywhere from 450 to 750 calories per hour. If you’re really coordinated and like hitting the slopes, you could participate in biathlon. This involves rifle shooting while cross-country skiing. You could burn a whopping 500 to 700 calories per hour. An important safety note is that if you decide to go ice skating, just be sure to exercise caution as slipping and falling on ice can cause injuries.
SHOVEL SNOW
If you live in a city where it snows heavily for most of the winter, shoveling snow as a side job can keep you active and fit. An average-sized person can burn a little over 400 calories per hour shoveling snow. Cities often hire people temporarily to help clear roads after a heavy snowstorm. You could also volunteer to shovel snow from the homes of your family, friends or senior citizens who aren’t able to do it themselves.
Comfort food or no comfort food, it’s easy to stay active in the winter. Working out at home, participating in outdoor winter sports and shoveling snow are three easy ways to keep your fitness up. Give them a try, and when the weather gets warmer, you can step into summer like it never left.
